Born in the timeless charm of Shimla, Cafe 1873 is a tribute to the hill station's colonial past and our family's century-and-a-half love for warm conversations, honest food and carefully brewed tea & coffee.
Our story begins in 1873 with Gainda Mull Hem Raj — a name etched into Shimla's Mall for generations as purveyors of chocolates, confectionery and fine provisions. Across five generations we have stayed in the same place we began, watching the town grow up around us.
In 2021, we stepped into the world of food & hospitality on our own terms — bringing that legacy forward in a new form. This is not just our story. It is Shimla. It is our family. It is Cafe 1873.

Our family business opened its doors in Shimla as Gainda Mull Hem Raj — a wholesale and retail house known for chocolates, confectionery and fine provisions. A name built on quality, integrity and lasting relationships.
Through decades of change — wars, independence, the building of modern Shimla — our values remained the same: trust, warmth, and a deep connection to our community.
Stepping into food & hospitality on our own terms, we set out to build something that honoured the past — a cafe where heritage met hospitality and every cup carried a story.
